This past weekend, my husband asked me to make something in the crockpot. Considering going to the grocery store doesn’t thrill me at all (I might even rather fold laundry), I started thinking about what we had around the house that I could throw together without having to leave home unnecessarily. I knew we had ground turkey, so I started looking up ‘crock pot ground turkey recipes’ in search of anything that could be good where I had 80% of the ingredients and could improvise the rest. What I found was simply called Slow Cooker Chili. Because that name is kind of boring, I am going to call it Taco Chili for the fun of it. Now, my first thought was ‘Chili when it’s 90 degrees outside?” But as I started reading the ingredients, I was check-marking off in my mind what I had, and when it was realized I kind of had most everything, thought ‘to hell with it’, and in the crockpot the ingredients went.

I got this recipe from Little Miss Kate, who states that the recipe is from Kraft Canada. Here is the recipe as actually stated on the website:

Slow Cooker Chili
Serves 8 FullSizeRender


1 lb Ground  Turkey or Lean Ground Beef (or Ground Meatless Crumbles for the vegetarians)
1 can Red Kidney Beans ( I did not have this, so I left it out)
1 can Black Beans
2 cups Salsa (I had two different kinds of salsa, so I mixed them to make up 2 cups)
1 can Tomato Sauce (I did not have this, so I used 1/2 cup of water and 1/4 cup of taco sauce)
2 tbsp Chili Powder (I didn’t have this, so I used one packet of Chili Seasoning Mix)
1 cup Frozen Corn
Shredded Cheese


  1. Brown meat and drain. Add to slow cooker with all of the remaining ingredients except for the cheese. Sir well, and cover with the lid. You can refrigerate overnight if you are making it ahead.
  2. Cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours
  3. Stir before serving. Place in serving dishes and top with cheese.


It doesn’t get any easier than that! Now that I am reading back, I did improvise…a lot. But it turned out great! Since I had to go to my second job while it was cooking (more on that in another post), I got a text from the hubby saying that the ‘Chili is awesome!’ So, I guess I didn’t do too bad with my…substitutions.

All in all, I would give the recipe 4 out of 5 stars. True, chili in the summer isn’t exactly what most people would think of; however it turned out pretty good, and hubby got something in the crock pot! Next time, I might try the recipe exactly as it reads…

…or I might substitute again with what is around the house. The end result might turn out more fun that way!
